Black forest Cake

Black forest is a cake traditionally originating from Germany. It is basically chocolate cake sandwiched with whipped cream with cherry topping. A typical black forest cake is decorated with additional whipped cream on top with chocolate shavings and maraschino cherries (preserved cherries). 

The actual recipe requires kirschwasser, which is basically a clear spirit from sour cherriesI usually use rum with sugar syrup while making this cake. But you can avoid alcohol and use alternatives like orange juice.

Preparation time:        1hr 
Cook time: 1 hr

Ingredients:

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup chocolate shavings / sprinkles
1 cup vegetable oil
3 eggs
1 tsp. baking powder
2 tbsp. dark cocoa powder
½ cup milk
2 tsp. Vinegar / Lime juice
1 tsp. vanilla essence
Whipped cream (spreadable consistency)

For sugar syrup
½ cup water
2 tbsp. sugar
1 tbsp. rum / brandy

Preparation:


  1. Sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and keep it aside.
  2. Whisk oil, fined sugar till smooth. Then add eggs beating well after each addition.
  3. Add flour mixture little by little. Add vinegar and mix well. Then add milk, vanilla essence and combine.
  4. Preheat oven at 140 degree and then bake it for 20 mts. Remove from oven and cool to room temperature.
  5. Cut the cakes into 2-3 layers. Pour some syrup on each layer. Spread the whipped cream on the layers and sandwich them.
  6. Spread the whipped cream on top. Garnish with chocolate shavings. 
  7. Pipe out the whipped cream to make designs over the cake and place the cherries on them.
